- « A day after violent demonstrations by supporters of the Rassemblement des Houphouétistes pour démocratie et la paix (RHDP, an alliance of four opposition parties) which produced 16 victims including 5 deaths, on Friday, the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Côte d'Ivoire, Young Jin Choi, arrived in Gagnoa to inquire about the situation and show compassion for the victims. Mr. Choi and his delegation, who arrived by helicopter, visited the prefect of the region, René Mohiro,at his residence. "We came to present our condolences to the families and wish a speedy recovery to the injured, and then to see how to avoid a repetition of such tragedy ", said Choi. In order to do this, he said « we must try to find out the origins, what was the reaction that led to death and injury". According to the Special Representative of the UN SG for Côte d'Ivoire, he came to find out the facts and to gather any analysis of the situation with a view to preventing a repetition of such a tragedy in other areas. For him him, the events were caused by politics and it means that a solution must be quickly found for the reasons for these demonstrations. Choi said that « there was a need to keep the perspectives, based on three principles: safeguard the past achievements, including the provisional electoral list, then establish a definitive electoral list, which is credible and reliable". (...) The prefect of the region explained to Mr. Choi the circumstances which led to the injury and death of civilians and military. Mr. Mohiro also spoke about the illegality of the demonstrations because, he added, the organisers of the protest march against the decisions to dissolve the government and the independent electoral Commission (CEI) by the president of the Republic did not inform the police and administrative authorities so they could make security provisions. After its discussions with the prefect, the UN delegation and the local authorities went to the regional hospital to visit the injured before going to the Dioulabougou neighbourhood to see the place where the demonstrations took place on the main road.

The RHDP organizes demonstrations: Bouaké says no to dictatorship
Le Patriote - "Last Saturday was a very tense day in Bouaké. The population, especially the youths, demonstrated to denounce the unpopular measures of the dissolution of the IEC and the government by Laurent Gbagbo. Expressing their discontent, the demonstrators braved threats and intimidation to say no, according to them, to the dictatorship which is being implemented in Côte d'Ivoire. Announced as a peaceful march, the demonstration took another turn. And thousands of demonstrators chanted « Gbagbo, resign! » or « Gbagbo, get out ». Among these excited young people, some were questioning the present position of Prime Minister Guillaume Soro in this crisis situation. "Soro, tell us which camp you belong to" was inscribed on placards. After a couple of hours, when the demonstrators reached the offices of the Secretariat-General of the Forces Nouvelles, the demonstration degenerated. The demonstrators headed for the Prefecture which they ransacked. Six vehicles were burnt and the offices were totally plundered. After the prefecture, the offices of the town hall were also plundered. The Mayor's office and the wedding room were ransacked."

Informed of the situation, the Prime Minister, who is also the Secretary-General of the Forces Nouvelles urgently went to Bouaké where he met the prefects led by Prefect Konin Aka. At the end of the meeting with Guillaume Soro, Prefect Konin Aka said he had not lost the will to continue working. "The Prime Minister asked us to continue our work. These are things which can occur. He gave us advice and expressed his compassion. It is an ongoing process. Of course it is not easy. However if all the prefects resign it would create another problem.

Le Patriote -
"Smoke, tyres and tables burnt at the main crossroads in the towns, demonstrators very angry. The capital of the Poro was very tense last Saturday. Responding to the leadership's decision, the RHDP's activists organized a big event to protest against the dissolution of the Electoral Commission and the government. In their anger, they burnt the house of the National Campaign Director for Laurent Gbagbo and the FPI's headquarters in Korhogo. And according to them this was a response to "the killings in Gagnoa and the speech of General Mangou Philippe on television" which included threats to arrest their leaders. [...]"

Affi N'guessan (the FPI's chairman), with regard to street demonstrations: "this is an attempt at insurrection"
Le Nouveau Réveil
- "Pascal Affi N'guessan, the FPI's chairman, held a press conference. He was with his closest collaborators. On their face we could see anxiety and total confusion. Assessing the street demonstrations of the opposition's activists, discontented with the last measures to dissolve the IEC and the government by President Laurent Gbagbo, Pascal Affi N'guessan accused the RHDP's leaders of insurrection. "The toll is worrying", he said. The FPI's chairman firmly said that « what is at stake is the electoral fraud ». But since the camp of candidate Laurent Gbagbo does not want to make compromise, so "Bédié and Alassane have decided to burn the country. They don't care about peace and national unity. By appealing for insurrection, their hidden intention is an attempt to threaten the State's security. It is an attempt at insurrection".

The recent speech by Mr. Mangou in which he warns his fellow citizens has been noted. We particularly want to warn our colleague Mr. Philippe Mangou against any violation of the populations' liberty and their right to demonstrate against a regime which has no consideration or compassion for the population's suffering. Mr. Mangou we will accuse you of all the killings which will be committed during the demonstrations against this bloody regime which they are rejecting and to which they no longer want to submit to. (...). Because of patriotism, we will join our colleagues who are already in the field in the coming hours to fight for total liberation and democratization of Côte d'Ivoire. (...) finally, we invite the RHDP right now to start the consultations to form a government which will help in organizing elections as soon as possible.
