UNOCI URGES IVORIAN PARTIES TO RESUME THE PROCESSING OF APPEALS ON THE ELECTORAL LIST

Abidjan, 29 April 2010... The United Nations Operation in Côte d'Ivoire (UNOCI) urges the Ivorian parties to continue to show the political will and determination to make the resumption of the appeals process on the provisional electoral list a reality, said its Spokesman, Hamadoun Touré, on Thursday.

Speaking during UNOCI's weekly press conference, Mr. Touré said that the Mission was actively following the different meetings and initiatives in connection with the electoral process. He added that UNOCI appreciated the recent progress made with the signing of the methodology guide for the processing of claims related to the list of legal cases (the grey list) and the decisions made.

In this regard, the Spokesman stressed that UNOCI was paying particular attention to the out-come of the recurrent questions on the white list.

The Spokesman said: «UNOCI encourages all the parties to work towards regaining confidence in the processing of all the lists and reinforcing transparency in preparing the definitive electoral list by allowing every petitioner to protest, if need be, with incontestable proof".

Turning to the Mission's activities in the field, the Spokesman announced that UNOCI Days had been organised in Tiémé, some 30 kilometres from Odienné. He said that it was an opportunity to discuss the population's contribution to creating a peaceful electoral environment.

The sixth edition of UNOCI Days started with medical consultations on Wednesday, during which the Bangladeshi battalion offered free medical treatment and medicines to the residents of Tiémé.

Like UNOCI Days in Vavoua, Hiré, Bocanda, Zouan Hounien and Akoupé, people in Tiémé will also enjoy sports and artistic activities organised to promote peace, social cohesion and national reconciliation, all of which contribute to creating a peaceful electoral environment, explained the Spokesman.
