Some 50
scouts from evangelical churches, on Saturday 17 July, met with the principal
deputy Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Côte
d'Ivoire, Abou Moussa, and they discussed the mission's role, mandate and
future. The principal deputy Special Representative congratulated the scouts for
their interest in the mission. "You are curious to know people who are working
at UNOCI, what they are doing there and how they do it, this is a good thing and
today you will have all the explanations which will help you giving exact
information to your families, friends in your neighborhoods, at school...", he
said.




 




UNOCI sensitizes in Bondoukou

UNOCI's Public Information and Human Rights Offices in Bondoukou,
on 16 July 2010, conducted a joint-sensitization mission on human rights and a
peaceful electoral environment in Siakakro, in the sub-prefecture of Akoboissué,
300 km east of Abidjan. The sensitization and information campaign known as
UNOCI Tour was aimed at giving the populations in this locality composed of
Sénoufo, Lobi, Malinké, Burkinabé, Malian, Togolese, Ghanaian and Béninois
communities, the opportunity to know their rights and duties and helping them to
better understand the need for social cohesion.




 




Odienné: Anthony
Banbury (United Nations) visits cantonment site and UNOCI's headquarters

The UN deputy Secretary-General, in charge of support, Anthony Banbury, on
Friday, went to Odienné where he visited a site converted by the French soldiers
of Licorne into a regrouping site for the Armed Forces of the Forces Nouvelles.




 




Statement by the
IEC – Launch of appeals process today in one part of Abidjan District

The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) informs the national and
international community that the appeals process regarding the provisional
electoral list starts on Tuesday 20 July 2010 in one part of the Abidjan
District. With regard to the interior of the country and abroad, the operation
will start progressively. A statement will be published in this regard. The IEC
relies on Ivorians' discipline and sense of citizenship for the good
implementation of the mission.

Tagro's reaction – "Ivorian law has confirmed that I am not a thief or
tribalist"

Law yesterday published the conclusions of investigations on the Minister of the
Interior. Cleared, the Minister said: "Since the opening of the investigation
following a request from the President of the Republic, I have always said to
all those who came up to me that I was not a thief or tribalist. My country's
law has just confirmed it. I am proud of it and that is more than enough for
me".





 




The case of journalists
accused of theft: 12 months of prison, a ban and a fine of 10 million fcfa
required by the prosecutor.

The prosecutors has asked for 12 months of imprisonment and a fine of 10 million
fcfa against three journalists from Le Nouveau Courrier, who are being
held in custody in Abidjan prison. The prosecutor also asked for the banning of
their newspaper and the confiscation of the computer on which the information
was processed. The trial which started at 3.35 p.m. was suspended by the
presiding judge, Brama Koné at 6:20 p.m. The result of the deliberation will be
known on Wednesday, July 21 at 11a.m. (...) We also noted that in the context of
this case, the chief editor of Le Quotidien d'Abidjan Aliali Allan was
interrogated on Monday by the crime police, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

on state media are of bad faith"

The president of the National Council of Audiovisual Communication (CNCA), Frank
Anderson Kouassi, disagrees with opponents of the presidential party who accused
President Gbagbo of having a strong grip on state media. The President of the
National Council of Audiovisual Communication (CNCA), Frank Anderson Kouassi,
denied the seizure by the presidential candidate, Laurent Gbagbo, and his clan
of the state media. Yesterday, taking advantage of his press conference to
launch the national debate committee and the special media programmes for the
presidential election, he lashed out at the FPI's opponents who have criticized
the president. Diégou Bailly's successor as head of the CNCA, questioned the
good faith of critics of President Gbagbo "People who accuse President Laurent
Gbagbo are of bad faith. They forget that Laurent Gbagbo is also a candidate and
president. He cannot ask foreign media to inform Ivorians or cover his
activities as president of Côte d'Ivoire." As far as, the debates and the
special media programmes are concerned, Franck Kouassi Anderson said that a
national debate committee will be in charge. This committee is composed of the
representatives of the 14 presidential candidates and a representative from each
of the following structures: civil society, facilitation, UNOCI, the IEC and the
RTI. According to Mr. Kouassi, the commission will propose a method to manage
the debates and the special programmes, find topics to discuss, determine the
schedule of the participants, and propose the moderators and the periods for the

Commission (IEC) is shaken by two rival clans that are threatening the
organisation of the presidential election in Côte d'Ivoire. The information
comes from a credible source at the Prime Minister's office. According to our
source the two groups refused to agree on the dates for the next presidential
election. While some officials of the institution want the presidential election
to be held no later than October 31, 2010, other, however, want it on December
or January 2011. (...)
