PRESS REVIEW FOR THURSDAY, 6 MAY 2010

After meeting with Y.J. Choi /
Touré Mamadou – "UNOCI is not entitled to forbid or authorize a demonstration"

L'Intelligent d'Abidjan -
The Special
Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General, Y. J. Choi, on
Wednesday, 5 May, held a meeting with the Chairman of the Coalition for Change
(CPC), Touré Mamadou. The discussion revolved around the sit-in that the
movement wants to organize on Thursday, 6 May in front of the headquarters of
the UN institution.

L'Intelligent d'Abidjan:
Mr. Touré
Mamadou, you have just met with UNOCI's Chief. What were the conclusions of the
discussion?

Touré Mamadou:

It should be noted that the meeting was a prelude to the big sit-in that we are
organizing tomorrow (editor's note:Thursday, 6 May 2010) in front of  UNOCI's
headquarters. Mr. Choi said he would like to meet us to discuss the
demonstration with us. The meeting gave us the opportunity to inform Mr. Choi of
our concerns, especially the deadlock in the electoral process, in other words,
what we consider like a kind of laxness of the international community with
regard to the actors who are blocking the process. Mr. Choi reminded us of the
United Nations mandate. He said that since the signing of the Ouagadougou
Political Agreement, the United Nations is no longer involved in the process the
way it was before. (...)

L'Intelligent d'Abidjan
:
Did Choi ask you to call off the demonstration?

Touré Mamadou
:
No, Mr. Choi just said that he does not intervene in the democratic process.
When the United Nations considers that demonstrations are democratic and
peaceful, Mr. Choi cannot see any objection to it. But its institution is not
responsible for forbidding or authorizing a demonstration.

Crisis-resolution in Côte
d'Ivoire: The African Union calls for strict respect of the Ouagadougou
Agreement

Notre Voie  -

The Peace and Security Council of the African Union (UA) on Monday, 3 May 2010,
organized, in Addis-Abeba (Ethiopia), a meeting around the
emergence-from-the-crisis in Côte d'Ivoire. (...) The Council asked the parties to
promote an appropriate climate for the completion of the process and the holding
of open, free, transparent and regular elections, especially by finding
solutions to pending issues, in accordance with the pertinent arrangements by
the Ouagadougou Political Agreement and its complementary agreements. The
Council invited the parties to provide their full cooperation to the Independent
Electoral Commission so that it fully plays its role and carry out its
obligations regarding the resolution of the pre-electoral appeals process and
the production of the electoral list. In this regard, the Council encouraged
them to give priority to the search for consensus for the interest of Côte
d'Ivoire. (...).

Djedje Mady, after a meeting
with the PIT, yesterday- « We are conferring to establish a Front for elections"

Le Patriote  -
The electoral process is
blocked. It needs a new impetus. But what? For Francis Wodié and the Ivorian
Workers Party (PIT), the solution is to establish the Front for Urgent Elections
(FUE). The PIT shared the proposal yesterday with the Union for Côte d'Ivoire
(UFCI) of Gnamien Konan and the RHDP of candidates Henri Konan Bédié, Alassane
Ouattara, Mabri Toikeusse and Anaky Kobena at its headquarters in Adjamé. The
PIT's guests gave their agreement for the establishment of the FUE (Front for
Urgent Elections). "We all know that the situation is blocked in such a way that
we do not know the date for the presidential election. Faced with this
situation, we believe, like the PIT, that it is urgent to establish the FUE",
said Gnamien Konan after the meeting. (...) this opinion was supported by the
RHDP's executive board which met with the PIT after UDPCI. "This is an open
secret that the electoral process is making no headway. We are totally in the
dark regarding the timetable which should lead us to the presidential election",
said Prof. Djédjé Mady, Chairman of the RHDP's executive. (...) This is why, he
explained, the RHDP took the initiative in meeting the PIT to discuss what
should be done to help the country emerge from the crisis in a peaceful way. "We
are conferring to obtain a front by all Ivorians. (...)"

Politico-Military plot: A
strange weapons cache discovered in Anyama

L'Expression
-
A politico-military plot or a proven fact? A curious weapons cache was
discovered yesterday at 13:00 PM in a neighborhood of Anyama by the elements of
the national gendarmerie. Fofana Baya, a student at the Franco-Arab University
was the only person apprehended. According to the squadron commander of the
gendarmerie of Abobo, the large arsenal discovered should be used to launch an
attack against the military camp of Akouedo on May 15. However, the discovery
contains some shadowy areas! (...) Only "Fraternité Matin" and "Notre Voie", the
newspapers close to the presidential camp were invited. Secondly, these weapons
(rockets, RPG7, A52, Ak47, etc...) were stored in a house located in a common
courtyard. How would someone take such risk by storing weapons in a place where
there is no privacy? (...) Why are the police so sure that these weapons will be
used on May 15 when the only person apprehended declared that he does not know
their destination? Here was certainly the heart of the enigma. According to
reliable sources, the head of state is planning to ban all marches until further
notice.

Feeling betrayed - 400
militiamen angry with Al Mustapha

L'Expression
-
Ex-combatants of the force Lima who fought in the west, are very angry with Al
Moustapha Touré, the leader of the Movement "'I love Gbagbo" (MJG). The reason
for their anger is an unfulfilled promise by the President of the MJG. According
to an ex-combatant who requested anonymity, "Don Mutchatcho" had promised during
a meeting last weekend to give to fifty (50) militiamen a job in an enterprise
and provide fifty (50) mobile phones to fifty others to manage their own cell
phone booth.
