Presidential election - Choi
denounces the slow pace of reunification

 - "The Special
Representative of the UN SG, Young-Jin Choi, has presented the 23rd report on
Côte d'Ivoire to the Security Council. He took stock of the peace
process, particularly the implementation of the Ouagadougou political Agreement.
After the closed consultations by the Council, consultations that will produce
the draft of a resolution to be adopted next week, Mr. Choi admitted to the
press "the existence of a parallel electoral list of a half million people that
is now a handicap to the scrupulous respect of the timetable already
established."




 




UNOCI has not been asked to
carry out an investigation

spokesman, Hamadoun Touré, speaking during the weekly press briefing, which he
hosted in Abidjan, expressed the hope that despite the establishment of the
Monitoring Committee, following the fraud allegations at the IEC, "the timing of
the data validation will be respected." He welcomed the fact that although
appeals were still being treated by some courts, others had finished this phase.
He said that nevertheless, the Mission was following the judicial investigation
initiated by the Ministry of Interior against the IEC and the ongoing national
mediation with great interest. "We are following the two phases," he said. Asked
whether the Mission had been asked to conduct an investigation as suggested by
the chairman of the IEC, Robert Beugré Mambé on January 15, to shed light on
this subject, he was categorical. "Regarding the internal investigation and the
public demand for an investigation by the United Nations, UNOCI has not
officially been approached (...)".

Representative of Cote d'Ivoire): "My country will not go to any kind of
election

Representative of Côte d'Ivoire to the United Nations, Alcide Djedje said that
"Ivorians are certainly eager to go to the elections but not to any kind of
election, especially not to the elections that would bring them back to square
one, that is to say to a new conflict." He was speaking before the fifteen
members of the Security Council during a consultation session yesterday at the
headquarters of the worldwide organization. [...] "




 




The PURC opposed to the
sending Burkinabe soldiers to Côte d'Ivoire to secure elections

Presumed fraud in IEC: the
central commission in IEC notes « an obvious failure of some of its services"

"The
Central Commission in the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) expressed
regret on Thursday, over the issue of the presumed fraud at the IEC, "an obvious
failure of some of its services".
