UNOCI distributes provisional electoral list in Abidjan

Abidjan, 13 November 2009... The distribution of the provisional electoral list in collect centres in Abidjan and its surrounding towns and villages started on Friday in Abidjan.

Organized by the United Nations Operation in Côte d'Ivoire (UNOCI), the operation which is scheduled to last two days concerns the 774 collection centres in greater Abidjan area.

In order to ensure that the distribution was progressing well, a team from the Mission is monitored the transportation of the list in the greater Abidjan neighbourhood of Yopougon.

The regional chief of the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) in Yopougon, Mr. Amadou Sanogo, received 23 boxes and 50 envelopes containing the electoral list destined for the 5 zones in the neighbourhood.

After checking the contents, the heads of the local IECs in five zones in Yopougon received the documents which were later transferred to their respective offices under escort provided by UNOCI's Jordanian battalion. For the head of Yopougon Sector 1, Mrs. Makengbê Kamara, it was a pleasure to have finally received the list. "Now, we are waiting for instructions from IEC headquarters to post them and then move on to the disputes phase," she said, before giving the assurance that the boxes containing the list will be stored in safety.

The same operation simultaneously took place throughout the city of Abidjan. It started on Wednesday with road transportation of the list throughout the country while air transport was begun yesterday by UNOCI, which provides logistical support to the IEC and the Ivorian government.
