UNOCI ENSURES SMOOTH DISTRIBUTION OF THE PROVISIONAL ELECTORAL LIST

Abidjan, 16 November 2009... The distribution of the provisional electoral list throughout Cote d'Ivoire has gone well, the Chief of the Electoral Assistance Division (EAD) of the United Nations Operation in Côte d'Ivoire (UNOCI), Ahmedou El Becaye Seck, said on Monday in Abidjan.

Speaking during an interview with ONUCI FM on the transportation of copies of the provisional electoral list in Abidjan and in the interior of the country, Mr. Seck said that UNOCI had transported the list to 308 sous-préfectures and neighbourhoods. "We achieved our objective in accordance with the role assigned to UNOCI by the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), to transport envelopes containing the list which were delivered to UNOCI," explained Mr. Seck.

In Sector East, UNOCI transported the list to 133 sous-préfectures. In Sector West, 139 sous préfectures were covered and 36 neighbourhoods in the Lagunes, Sud Comoé regions and Abidjan.

The EAD head said that despite some problems that the operation encountered in covering locations because some of the envelopes handed to UNOCI by the IEC had been wrongly addressed, the operation had gone well. The Mission is going to help the IEC rectify the mistakes quickly so that the operation can continue, said Mr. Seck. He said this had already started in the interior of the country where 213 mistakes were quickly corrected with the help of the local electoral commissions.

In Abidjan, he continued, UNOCI had taken the necessary measures, in collaboration with the IEC, to ensure that within 48 hours, Adzopé, Bouna and Grand-Bassam will receive their envelopes which were mistakenly delivered to the Abidjan neighbourhoods of Abobo and Cocody.

The road, air and river transport operation of the provisional electoral list launched on Wednesday, 11 November, ended on Friday, 13 November 2009.
