UNOCI ANNOUNCES DEATH OF JORDANIAN POLICE OFFICER

Abidjan, 31 December 2009... The United Nations Operation in Côte d'Ivoire (UNOCI) regrets to announce the death, on Tuesday 29 December 2009, of Warrant Officer Batayneh Iyad Mohammad of its Jordanian Formed Police Unit.

Warrant Officer Batayneh Iyad Mohammad, who was 33 years old, was on mission in Côte d'Ivoire since 10 September 2009.

His death brings to eight (8) the number of UNOCI policemen to have died since the mission was first deployed in April 2004.

An inquiry has been launched to determine the circumstances of his death.

UNOCI extends its heartfelt condolences to the Government of Jordan and the family of the deceased.
