Summary of UNOCI weekly press conference

Abidjan, 9 September 2010... The United Nations Operation in Côte d'Ivoire (UNOCI) encourages the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) to examine three urgent issues including the publication of the country's electoral cartography, said the Mission's Spokesman, Hamadoun Touré, on Thursday in Abidjan.

Speaking at UNOCI's weekly press conference, he added that the remaining issues consist of organizing the transportation of electoral material and the necessary accessories, as well as identification and training sessions for electoral agents.

In the context of electoral dynamic, the spokesman recalled the past achievements in the process; the latest is the agreement adopted on Monday regarding the final voters list.

"It is a historic agreement," said Mr. Touré, repeating the statement made by the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Côte d'Ivoire, Y.J. Choi, at the end of the consultations he held with the Ivorian political leaders yesterday.

In this connection, the spokesman explained that the implementation of the agreement will give millions of people the opportunity to obtain their identity cards for the first time.

"This means that the only remaining challenge will be the presidential election," he added.

With regard to the Mission's activities, Mr. Touré announced the resumption of the sensitization days for the promotion of a peaceful electoral environment on 15 September in Arrah, some 200 km from Abidjan, in the N'Zi Comoé region. UNOCI delegation, he said, will be led by the Deputy Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Côte d'Ivoire, Ndolamb Ngokwey.

According to Mr. Touré, the sensitization Days in Arrah, like in all the localities that will host the caravan, are aimed at obtaining the population's involvement and commitment to pacify hearts and minds in this crucial phase of the crisis-resolution process.

"The major innovation in the second edition will be the free legal consultations that will be conducted in collaboration with the Ivorian bar," said the spokesman who added that it would be an opportunity for Ivorian lawyers to participate in the definitive re-establishment of peace in their country.

In conclusion, Mr. Touré announced that the second series of the sensitization campaign will be held in Samatiguila, Bangolo, Facobly, M'bahiakro, Sassandra, Koun Fao, Bonon, Sinematiali and Mankono.
