Choi meets Bakayoko this

The Special Representative of
the United Nations Secretary-General for Côte d'Ivoire, Young-Jin Choi, on
Tuesday 14 September 2010, will hold talks with the Chairman of the Independent
Electoral Commission (IEC), Youssouf Bakayoko, at the mission's headquarters.
The meeting is being held after the official handover of the electronic version
of the final voters list on Saturday. This will be an opportunity for both men
to discuss what seems to be the new disagreement regarding the organization of
the presidential election, that is whether electoral documents will be produced
by the national publishing company or not.




 




Presidential election – UNOCI
is conducting sensitization campaign

In order to
participate in the creation of a peaceful electoral environment, the UN mission
starts its consultations with the population. The United Nations Operation in
Côte d'Ivoire (UNOCI) is going to resume its sensitization days for the
promotion of a peaceful electoral environment on 15 September 2010. The
objective is "to obtain the population's support and commitment to pacify their
hearts and minds in this crucial phase of the crisis-resolution process." The
events will start in the N'Zi Comoé region, in Arrah.

The Quai d'Orsay's
congratulations

The French Minister of Foreign Affairs yesterday said he was satisfied that the
electoral process was advancing toward the organization of fair, transparent and
open election for everyone. According to the deputy spokesperson for the Quai
d'Orsay, "it is a very significant achievement in the preparation of the Ivorian
presidential election". The French authorities, therefore, encourage, Ivorians
to "carry out the necessary actions for the smooth holding of the first round of
the election on 31 October."




 




The Secretary-General of the
Elysée, Claude Guéant meets Gbagbo

After several postponements, the Secretary-General of the Elysée, Claude Guéant,
is coming again to the Ivorian economic capital. The right-hand man of Nicolas
Sarkozy is supposed to meet the Ivorian Head of State, Laurent Gbagbo, to speak
about bilateral relationships. The information was divulged by the Pan-African
weekly newspaper "Jeune Afrique" in its edition published on 12 to 18 September

Presidential election: Soro
sensitizes civil society

Prime Minister Soro Kigbafori Guillaume, principal organiser of the Ivorian
presidential election, yesterday afternoon, held talks with the leaders of the
civil society convention and association offices. The Chief of government
informed his guests of the current development of the process and assessed all
the actions conducted in preparation of the electoral process. "You are entitled
to be informed of the executive's actions. We have to inform you so that you
transmit the information to the population and the members of your associations
to help Ivorians have the right information", he said.

United States / Embargo on
Côte d'Ivoire – Ivorian arrested with arms

An Ivorian was arrested when he was attempting to take fire arms, ammunitions
and grenades to a west African country under the leadership of officers in San
José. N'Guessan Yao, aged 55, was arrested in New York, on Thursday, and was
suspected of illegal exportation of arms. According to Virginia Kice,
spokesperson for US Immigration and Customs Enforcement, he said that the
transfer was due to be made at the San Francisco port (Bay Area). The United
Nations has imposed an arms embargo on Côte d'Ivoire since 2004 to put an end to
the conflict between the government and rebels in the north of the country. (...)
Someone told the federal officers in San José that a resident in USA, Michael
Shor, was trying to take 4000 arms, 200,000 ammunitions and 50,000 grenades to
Côte d'Ivoire. But the officer who reported the facts to the court did not say
which camp was supposed to receive the arms. "This was a big arms seizure", said
Sohr Morton, director of the customs office. (...)
