Security Sector Reform (SSR): UNOCI’s mission of information and exchange in Bondoukou and Bouna

An assessment and exchange mission by the Security Sector Reform section of the United Nations Operation in Côte d'Ivoire (UNOCI), met with various local actors to share their experiences and discuss security and the protection of civilians from 9 to 17 February 2016, in Gontougo and Boukani regions.

During the visit, the head of UNOCI's SSR office in Sector East, Colonel Mamadou Toure, highlighted the issue of information and training during meetings with administrative authorities, the police, the security forces, and leaders of civil society to assess the facilitation and implementation process undertaken by the UN Mission.

Colonel also made a presentation to participants on security mechanisms to protect civilians so that they are able to meet the requirements of the national consolidation and reconciliation process.

"The basic document that we have in Côte d'Ivoire in connection with SSR is the National Strategy on Security Sector Reform drawn up by the Government. The main objective of this document is to protect people living in Côte d'Ivoire and to preserve the interests of the State and those of the people," he said.

After the visit, local authorities and the different civil society actors outlined their role in the implementation of the SSR programme and their understanding of interdependence of human security and State interests as the part of the peace process.
