UNOCI trains prison warders from Korhogo and Boudiali



Some 37 prison warders from Korhogo and Boundiali, 580 km and 680 km north of Abidjan respectively have undergone training on the rights of detainees organized by the UN Operation in Cote d'Ivoire (UNOCI)

The 2-day training which began on 13 March 2014 was conducted by Gamene Abdul Azziz of UNOCI Corrections Unit who pointed out that "the deprivation of freedom did not mean the deprivation of rights."







The Superintendents of the Korhogo and Boundiali Prisons ,Solange Ble and Abdoulaye Traore said the warders who had undergone the course have understood that detainees and prisoners must be treated humanely from the day they entered prison till the day they are released.

Subjects treated during the course included the right to physical and moral integrity; decent conditions of living regarding lodging, feeding, clothing and bedding; the right to health and proper hygiene, right to participate in religious and cultural activities, the freedom of religion, the taking into account of the needs of women detainees and access to lawyers and the outside world.
