UN Day commemorated in several parts of Cote d’Ivoire





United Nations Day on 24 October 2014 was commemorated in several towns by the UN Operation in Cote d'Ivoire (UNOCI) and the UN Country Team. While the town of Bouake hosted the official ceremony to mark the Day (see separate story), various activities were organized in the towns of Bakoubly, Kononfla, Bondoukou, Korhogo, Sassandra, Oume and Man to highlight the occasion.



In Man, a roundtable conference on the theme: "Local leadership and the involvement of women in promoting peace and social cohesion in Tonkpi" during which the Prefect of Tonkpi Region and Man division, Jerome Soro Kayaha said UN Day was an occasion for the population to revisit the fundamental principles of the UN Charter. He underlined the decisive role of the world body in resolving the different crises that have rocked Cote d'Ivoire and expressed satisfaction with the support it has given the Government in security sector reform, the consolidation of peace, in the health and education sectors, human rights and humanitarian and food aid.



In Bakoubly, Toulepleu division in the far west, activities included a sensitization session on the need to create a peaceful election environment in view of the 2015 general elections, the fight against pregnancies in schools and prevention of the Ebola fever.



In Kononfla Sub Prefecture (Marahoue region), 300 km from Abidjan, a workshop was organized for some 50 opinion leaders to identify obstacles to the peace and national reconciliation process and recommend solutions.

In Bondoukou (Gontougo region) 402 km north-east of Abidjan, a lecture on the objectives of the UN was organized for pupils and secondary school students during which the message of the UN Secretary-General was read.

In Korhogo, 580 km north of Abidjan, media practitioners and members of civil society discussed ways of promoting peace , maintaining objectivity and impartiality in the treatment of news, mechanisms for conflict prevention and the electoral process.



Similar workshops and meetings were held in Bas Sassandra and Oume to commemorate UN Day. In Oume, the meeting brought together traditional and religious authorities, women and youth leaders who discussed peace, social cohesion and development related issues affecting their area.
