Special Representative holds discussions with delegation of election observers from WAMU’s Inter-parliamentary Union

A few days before the presidential election in Côte d'Ivoire, the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Côte d'Ivoire, Mrs Aïchatou Mindaoudou, on Tuesday, 20 October 2015, received a delegation of election observers of the Inter-parliamentary Union of the West African Monetary Union (WAMU) led by Ibrahima Sané, the first parliamentary secretary of the Union.

Speaking after the meeting, the head of the delegation said that they had discussed the forthcoming presidential election and the electoral process with the head of the United Nations Operation in Côte d'Ivoire (UNOCI). "{We were able to gather information on the activities being carried out by the United Nations to support Côte d'Ivoire}", said Mr. Sané.

With regard to the WAMU's observation process, Mr. Sané recalled that the observers were members of parliament who had a lot of experience in the electoral process in their countries, and who are then sent on electoral observer missions in various countries.

"{We also had discussions with the institutions in charge of the elections as well as the candidates and now we will go to different parts of the country to observe the voting and counting of votes process, after which we will provide information on how the process was conducted,}" said Mr Sané, before calling for peaceful elections so that Côte d'Ivoire can continue to be "WAMU's economic engine".
