Political dialogue between the government and certain opposition parties grouped

under the Permanent Framework for Dialoge is scheduled to resume on 6 September.

Meanwhile Prime Minister Kablan Duncan is expected to persuade the FPI party to

resume political talks aimed creating  favourable condition for true

reconciliation and a lasting peace.

A clash between youths of the Malinke and Guere communities in Duekoue was

preempted on Monday following the timely intervention of the local

administrative authorities. Tension rose on Sunday night when a youth of peuhl

origin was attacked with a machete in a quarter inhabited mostly by the Guere.

The Constitutional Court has declared itself incompetent to entertain a petition

by the Ivorian Civil Society Convention and the NGO "SOS Exclusion" calling for

the postponement of the parliamentary vote on the bill authorising the the head

of state to ratify the 1961 Convention on stateless persons. The Court , in a

decision published on 20 August, said the two civil society organizations were

not qualified to demand the suspension of a bill under examination at the

National Assembly.

Fologo says the adoption of the bill on nationality and land ownership

constitutes a time bomb, remarking that the bill was "hastily adopted by a

limping National Assembly."

The consultative phase of the national reconciliation process began throughout

the national territory last Wednesday. This phase expected to last four weeks,

will consist in listening to members of the public about their opinion

concerning the reconciliation process,providing a forum for victims to air their

grievances, investigations and public hearings.

A strike by taxis equipped with taxi meters was effectively adhered to yesterday

in Abidjan. Commuters in the city faced enormous difficulties getting to work as

the 5-day strike went into effect despite an earlier announcement suspending the

strike. The strike action is in protest against the circulation of unmarked 

inter-communal transport vehicles which have not fulfilled the conditions for

plying the taxi business.
