Elections in Côte d’Ivoire: Special Representative receives delegation of the Group of Women’s Organisations working for Equality

The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Côte d'Ivoire, Mrs Aïchatou Mindaoudou, on Tuesday, 25 November 2014, met with a delegation of the Group of Women's Organisations Working for Equality led by its spokesperson, Mrs Rachèle Gogoua.

Speaking at the end of the discussions at the UN Mission's headquarters in Abidjan, Mrs Gogoua said that she and her delegation had come to present their Women and Elections programme to the head of UNOCI and to ask for her support in its implementation in light of forthcoming elections. "We need the support of the Special Representative, not only with regard to the United Nations agencies but also in terms of other development partners to assist us with our programme," said the Spokesperson of the Group.

Mrs Gogoua said she also discussed women's representation in the decision-making process with the head of UNOCI. "This is a very important point when you consider the inequality which exists between men and women in our country."

It should be noted that the meeting between the Special Representative and members of the Group is part of the 16 Days of activism to end violence Against Women campaign which started on 25 November 2014 and which coincides with the commemoration of International Day to End Violence Against Women.

The Group brings together several women's organisations involved in promoting equality in all sectors of life in Côte d'Ivoire.
