Civil servants from Poro and Bagoué regions sensitised on Human Rights

Some 30 civil servants from Poro and Bagoué regions have made a commitment to relay information on human rights violations and their consequences on social cohesion to their colleagues. This resolution was adopted at the end of a training workshop held on 11 and 12 November 2014 by the Legal Clinic of Korhogo, in collaboration with the United Nations Operation in Côte d'Ivoire (UNOCI), in Korhogo, situated at 580 km north of Abidjan.

Speaking at the event, the Legal Clinic of Korhogo's officer in charge of capacity-building, Inza Bamba, said that the workshop was part of the Project to Support and Improve Access to Rights and Justice in Côte d'Ivoire (Projet d'Appui à l'Amélioration de l'Accès aux Droits et à la Justice en Côte d'Ivoire - PALAJ). It also aims to sensitise and build the capacity of State employees such as teachers, social workers health managers on human rights violations and social cohesion as well as civil procedures.

The training session was carried out by UNOCI's Human Rights Officer, Salif Boité and a trainer from the local court in Korhogo.

Mr. Salif Boité told participants « As employees of the State, civil servants have the obligation to protect, respect, and promote human human rights while carrying out their functions. If they fail to carry out these obligations then this constitutes a human rights violation ».

Discussions which followed the different presentations gave participants the opportunity to widen their knowledge and improve their understanding of human rights and their impact on social cohesion. They also deepened their understanding of civil procedures.
