1000 MICRO PROJECTS INITIATIVE TO BE LAUNCHED IN BOUAKÉ

Abidjan, 13 August 2008...The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Côte d'Ivoire, Y.J. Choi will officially launch "the 1000 micro-projects" initiative for the reintegration of ex-combatants and young people at risk on Thursday, 14 August 2008, in Bouaké.

The micro projects, worth $4 million, will go to ex-combatants or former militias members who have been profiled by the National Programme for Reintegration and Community Rehabilitation (PNRRC) and hold a demobilisation card.

The "1000 micro projects" initiative covers a wide range of activities including technical training, market gardening, animal husbandry, fishing, forestry, construction, transportation, motor mechanics, public works and catering. The aim of the micro projects is also to contribute to the fight against poverty and youthful unemployment. In addition, it is hoped that they will help provide a secure and stable environment for free and fair elections while reintegrating ex-combatants into their former communities.

After Bouaké, the head of the United Nations Operation in Côte d'Ivoire (UNOCI) will go to Séguéla, Korhogo, Odienné, Guiglo, Issia and San Pedro for a sensitisation and information tour on the micro projects initiative. The Special Representative will be accompanied by officials of national institutions involved in the reintegration of ex-combatants and young people at risk: the President's Office, the PNRRC and the National Civic Service Programme.

The "1000 micro projects" initiative is part of the support for the national programme for the reintegration of ex-combatants and ex-militia, established by the Ivorian Government and backed by international partners, including the European Union, the World Bank, United Nations agencies, UNOCI and bilateral programmes.
