UNOCI urges the people of Zoukougbeu to promote peace and development

The United Nations Operation in Côte d'Ivoire (UNOCI), in a bid to better educate the local population of Zoukougbeu about its mandate and to encourage them to serve as a role model of peace and development, organized a sensitization meeting with the people on 26 November 2013 in the village, situated 450 km from Abidjan.

"We have come to discuss with you in order for you to better understand us and to reaffirm our readiness to support all initiatives aimed at promoting peace and reconciliation," the head of the UNOCI delegation Prosper Shabani told the population.

Representatives of UNOCI's Public Information, Civil Affairs, Human Rights, Rule of Law and Child Protection sections, as well as UN Police explained their various roles in implementing the mandate of the UN Mission in Côte d'Ivoire.

"Those who commit rape are criminals and should be brought before the law to answer for their acts," the Child Protection Officer declared.

The deputy prefect of Zoukougbeu, Zerehoue Wincedi expressed gratitude to UNOCI for its constant support to the Ivorian people in general and those in Zoukougbeu in particular.

The meeting was marked by the participation of the medical team of the Jordanian contingent of UNOCI Force based in Daloa which gave free consultations and treatment to some 300 patients.
