UNOCI trains warders in Abengourou Prison on security measures

Some 30 warders of the prison in Abengourou, 210 km east of Abidjan took part in a training programme organized on Tuesday 4 March 2014 by the UN Operation in Cote d'Ivoire (UNOCI).

The training session which centered on security arrangements and search operations in the prison environment was conducted by a representative of UNOCI Rule of Law Office, Luc Zina who is also coordinator of UNOCI Office in Abengourou. Accompanied by practical exercises, participants were drilled on the different measures to be taken to prevent and manage incidents that may cause trouble in prison.

Mr. Zina urged trainees to exercise discipline and professionalism in the execution of their duties and to always resort to negotiations when expressing grievances.

"The security of penitentiary establishments relies to a great extent on the vigilance, discipline and duty consciousness of the staff, in order words, you the warders and superintendents," he pointed out.

For his part, the Superintendent of the Abengourou Prison, Sinali Ouattara said the training session was welcome because it would permit warders to have the right attitude in the field and promised to put the knowledge acquired into practice. "We need this type of training which educates us a lot," he said.

The training ended in a question and answer session to ensure a better understanding of the subject matter.
