UNOCI promotes peace and social cohesion through sport

The United Nations Operation in Côte d'Ivoire on 1 September 2013 took part in a sports and cultural event known as "Seweto Pantrokin" which means "incomparable" in the local language of the Denan and Sahibly villages in Toulepleu division, in the far west of Côte d'Ivoire.

UNOCI took the opportunity to sensitise and encourage people to work towards strengthening social cohesion in order to consolidate peace. "UNOCI stood by you during the difficult moments of the post-electoral crisis. It continues to support you through the peace process and the socio-economic recovery of your division," the representative of UN Police who led the UNOCI delegation declared. Sport, he said, was a unifying factor and called on them to exercise the spirit of fair play and accept the results of the match. "Football matches provide an occasion for getting together to show friendship and solidarity as a way of reinforcing the understanding among the different communities.

The president of the organizing committee of the event, Djetin Zeade Daudet thanked UNOCI for its support for the 2013 edition of the event; a support which, he said, was a source of encouragement for the committee and the participants.

The head of the local administration, the deputy prefect of Pehe, Barro Arouna, welcomed the efforts of the different villages which took part in the sports competition, saying they had demonstrated that peace has been restored. 'I call on you to be resolutely committed to the wide movement for national reconciliation and reconstruction in order to give our division a chance to realize its economic potential for the wellbeing of its inhabitants," he stressed.

UNOCI gave out several prizes for fair play as well as to folk dance groups.
