Sport unites people of Adiake

The people of Adiake, 80 km south-east of Abidjan, all came together between 29 November and 1 December 2013 for a Maracana football tournament organized by the Ivorian Armed Forces (FRCI) with the assistance of the United Nation Operation in Côte d'Ivoire (UNOCI). The event was aimed at promoting peace and national reconciliation.

According to UNOCI, sport is a universal language which promotes peace and reconciliation and creates a peaceful social environment. During the tournament, UNOCI representatives organized open discussions with the population on human rights issues, the peaceful resolutions of conflicts, social cohesion, gender, the culture of peace and the fight against HIV/AIDS.

The people and local authorities of Adiake expressed their appreciation for the impact of the sport for peace caravan which began in July 2011 and has visited several Ivorian towns including Jacqueville, Dabou, Grand Lahou, Aboisso, Gagnoa, Divo, Sassandra and Tiassale.

UNOCI has been taking part in the caravan in line with its determination to promote sport as a uniting factor that can help rebuild and consolidate peace in Côte d'Ivoire.

UNOCI peacekeepers took active part in the tournament along with the Ivorian Army and youth associations.
