Special Representative of United Nations Secretary-General meets Ivorian Minister of Justice

The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Côte d'Ivoire and head of the United Nations Operation in Côte d'Ivoire (UNOCI), Mrs Aïchatou Mindaoudou, on Thursday, 17 April 2014 met with the Ivorian Minister of Justice and Public Liberties, Gnénéma Mamadou Coulibaly. The two officials discussed the operation of exhumation of victims of the post-electoral crisis and the text adopted by the Council of Ministers on the management of prisons.

Speaking on about the operation of the exhumation of victims of the post-electoral crisis, the Ivorian Minister of Justice said that the second phase of the operation will start before the end of the first semester of this year in the west of the country. "As you know the UN in Côte d'Ivoire is our main partner in the actions that we carry out. We have already carried out exhumation together in Abidjan. We will start the second phase very soon in the west of Côte d'Ivoire. It was therefore important to discuss with the Special Representative what has already been done and what we intend to do together in the west of Côte d'Ivoire in the future," said Mr. Gnénéma Mamadou Coulibaly.

On the issue of the text on prison management adopted by the Government yesterday, the Ivorian Justice Minister said it was important for him to speak directly with the Special Representative about it. "As you know UNOCI provides us with assistance with regard to prison management and administration, so it is good for us to speak directly with the Special Representative so she can understand why this decision was taken," he added.

In addition, Mr. Coulibaly said that he and the Special Representative had also discussed other issues of interest to UNOCI and the Ministry of Justice.
