Special Representative receives new OCHA chief

Following a meeting with the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Côte d'Ivoire, Mrs Aïchatou Mindaoudou, the new chief of the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), Mr. Traoré Modibo announced that the United Nations was ready to assist the Ivorian Government in its response to the flooding caused by heavy rains during the past few days.

« We are working with the Ministry of Solidarity, Family, Women and Children to try to coordinate the response to the humanitarian needs, », said Mr. Traoré. He also spoke about the OCHA's humanitarian priorities, while pointing out the humanitarian needs in Côte d'Ivoire had decreased significantly.

« Our priorities focus mainly on prevention of risky and catastrophic situations. We also respond to disasters such as the flooding by organizing assessment missions, mobilizing partners who will give the appropriate response in these situations and providing the affected populations with the opportunity to find the means to restart their lives, », he explained.
