Special Representative meets with representatives of the African Union and ECOWAS

The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Côte d'Ivoire, Aichatou Mindaoudou, on 2 September 2015, met with the Representative the African Union (AU) in Côte d'Ivoire, Mrs. Josephine-Charlotte Mayuma Kala and the Representative of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), Mr. Jonathan Oluwolé Coker at the headquarters of the United Nations Operation in Côte d'Ivoire (UNOCI) in Abidjan.

After the meeting, the AU Representative said that it was a tripartite conciliation meeting during which the social and political situation in Côte d'Ivoire was discussed.

"We discussed political and social issues and the concerns of Ivorians," she said.

Mrs Mayuma Kala also said that as representatives of the sub-regional, continental and international mechanisms, it was important for them to meet to harmonize their views and have a common position with regard to the problems Côte d'Ivoire could face.

Speaking about the coming elections, she said that UNOCI, the AU and ECOWAS were closely following the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC)'s work. The AU Representative added that their institutions were paying attention to what the Government and political parties and the press were doing.

"We believe that Ivorian people want peaceful elections. Nobody wants what happened in Côte d'Ivoire in 2010 to happen again. We all hope that this country will continue its development momentum", she said.
