Peace, social cohesion and national reconciliation: These were the main topics of discussion between a team from the United Nations Operation in Côte d'Ivoire (UNOCI) and the people of Soribadougou village, situated on the road between Akoupé and Abengourou, some 77 km from Adzopé, on Friday, 6 December 2013.

The discussion was an initiative of UNOCI's Public Information Office, with the support of the Mission's Civil Affairs Section and UN Police (UNPOL). Some 130 people, including the village Chief and his officials, community and religious leaders, representatives of youth and women's groups, took part in the information and sensitisation session.

The representative of the Public Information Office, Daouda Dosso, reminded participants that the moment to stand united in order to attain their objective had come - that object is to rebuild a united Côte d'Ivoire based on peace and forgiveness. The aim of UNOCI's action was to inform people on the peace process, he explained. We came to discuss with you in your village and to give you the sort

of information which will bring you together and help you attain lasting peace in a secure environment," he added, adding that the meeting strengthen the collaboration between UNOCI and the people of Soribadougou. He then urged villagers to make a commitment to promote social cohesion and national reconciliation.

Alioune Kassé of UNPOL outlined the UN Mission's role in the protection of civilians, especially women and children, by supporting the local security forces. This, he said was why UNOCI peacekeepers can be seen patrolling the local area.
