Security Sector Reform: National Security Council and UNOCI sensitise civil society and security forces in Daloa

Provide members of civil society organisations in Daloa, including representatives of the media, as well as members of the security forces with the necessary tools to become active actors in the implementation of Security Sector Reform (SSR) - this was the aim of a seminar organised by the National Security Council with technical and logistical support provided by the United Nations Operation in Côte d'Ivoire on Tuesday, 17 September 2013.

The seminar was also aimed at providing some 20 participants with a better understanding of the SSR process initiated by the Ivorian authorities as the representative of the Communication Cell of the Council, Mireille Tanoh Fram, explained at the start of the discussions. " {We are here to explain to you what we mean by security sector reform and then form a partnership with civil society actors and local authorities to ensure an effective implementation of the process,}" she explained.

Participants were asked to make suggestions on how best to re-establish trust between security forces and the population. Speaking at the end of the encounter, they welcomed the information provided by the training. " {This seminar has provided me with the tools to better explain in my articles what exactly is meant by the security sector reform process. I now understand that SSR does not only concern the military but in fact concerns everyone}," said Bernard Yobouet, a press correspondent, at the end of the meeting. His colleague Saint Aguy Koné, for his part, promised to better promote SSR, adding that appropriation of the process by civil society can only contribute to the development of the country.
