Population in Soko sensitized on access to legal rights and justice

Informing people about their legal rights – that was the main objective of an event organized in Soko, situated 424 km northeast of Abidjan, on Friday, 26 July 2013. The session was organized by the Legal Clinic of Bondoukou, a project launched to improve the population's access to legal rights and justice in Côte d'Ivoire, and which is implemented and jointly financed by the United Nations Operation in Côte d'Ivoire (UNOCI), the European Union, the UN Development Programme (UNDP) and the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF).

Addressing the population, the director of the Legal Clinic of Bondoukou, Yvonne Jules Kodja, began by explaining the mission and mandate of the organization before outlining the sort of issues they deal with, such as birth registrations, education of girls, marriages and early pregnancy. Mrs Kodja also urged people to contact the clinic regarding all their problems linked to legal rights and justice.

Several questions which demonstrated the public's interest in the activity were asked during the session. Speaking on behalf of participants, the president of the mutual society of Soko, Adama Ouattara, said that they were committed to relaying the information they had received to ensure that people make full use of the legal clinic in Bondoukou.

The president of the women's association known as « Gnounounon » which means

"Union", Boua Adjoua Manou, for her part, said that the women of Soko were aware that they needed to be informed on how best to ensure that their daughters are educated.

Some 100 people, including the village chief, Benoit Kobenan, took part in the session during which free consultations were given by legal experts.
