ONUCI Tour takes peace and reconciliation message to Tahiraguhe

The grassroots sensitization campaign of the UN Operation in Cote d'Ivoire (UNOCI) was held in the village of Tahiraguhe (a dozen km from Daloa) on 9 December 2014 to promote peace and national reconciliation.

Members of the campaign team dubbed ONUCI Tour included Hyacinthe Brou Yao of the Human Rights Office who called on the population to work towards creating a peaceful environment for elections scheduled to hold in 2015. « We have come to assure you of UN support of your efforts to maintain a peaceful atmosphere and guarantee a violence-free election in 2015. In order to develop, you need peace, » he said.

Tahiraguhe, the home of famous Ivorian musicians Ernesto Djedje and Luckson Padau, unlike many towns of Daloa division, did not degenerate into violence during the post electoral crisis which rocked the country in 2010 and the Chief of the village, Luc Bai promised to maintain the status quo during the forthcoming elections.

Other members of the ON UCI-Tour team were representatives of the Public Information; Disarmament, Demobilisation and Reintegration and Security Sector Reform Offices who explained to the population the role of their various sections in implementing the UN Mandate in Cote d'Ivoire.

They also called on the villagers to respect the Chief and to desist from peddling false information. « During an election period, rumours very often disrupt social cohesion between communities. Consult the Chief every time you receive any information, » the Public Information representative, Anicet Bekrou advised.
