Special Representative leads high-level delegation to western Cote d’Ivoire

The Special Representative of UN Secretary-General to Cote d'Ivoire, Mrs. Aichatou Mindaoudou on 20 May 2015 began a 4-day tour of the western part of Cote d'Ivoire at the head of a high-level delegation including the Resident Coordinator of the UN Country Team and heads of some UN Agencies.

The Agencies involved are the UN High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR), the Office of the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), the World Food Programme (WFP), the UN Development Agency (UNDP), the UN Population Fund (UNFPA), the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF), the UN Entity for Gender Equality and Women's Empowerment, (UN Women) as well as the International Organisation for Migration (IOM).

The delegation is scheduled to visit several parts of the Guemon, Tonkpi, Cavally and Bas Sassandra.

The 4-day visit is a follow-up to a previous one undertaken by the delegation in February 2014 during which members met with the various components of civil society including the elite of the area, community and traditional leaders and representatives of women's and youth groups in order to gauge the level of social cohesion and security as well as the social and humanitarian situation.

The UN Operation in Cote d'Ivoire (UNOCI) has already assisted the women in the area to set up income-generating activities and sensitized them on the fight against gender-based violence while local authorities were given assistance in the rehabilitation of public infrastructures.

Within the framework of the Special Representative's good offices, the current tour would enable the delegation to engage in dialogue with all stakeholders with a view to strengthening national reconciliation and social cohesion in order to create a peaceful environment for the forthcoming presidential election.
