Civil society groups in Abengourou trained on conventional and non-conventional mechanisms of human rights protection

In an effort to give civil society organisations the opportunity and capacity to significantly contribute to improving the human rights situation in the Indenié-Djuablin region in particular and Côte d'Ivoire in general, the regional human rights office in Bondoukou of the United Nations Operation in Côte d'Ivoire (UNOCI), on 29 October 2013, organised a training workshop in Abengourou, situated 210 km, east of Abidjan on the conventional and non-conventional mechanism for human rights protection.

Presiding over the opening ceremony, the deputy prefect, Jeannette Okoma Adjo, who represented the Prefect of the region and the department of Abengourou, urged participants to put in practice the knowledge they will gain during the workshop for the benefit of people in the region.

Explaining UNOCI's reasons for organising the event, the representative of the Human Rights Division said that the training was in accordance with the Mission's mandate to work closely with civil society groups and contribute to strengthening their capacity so that they can effectively participate in the promotion and protection of human rights in the country.

Through a participative method used during the training workshop, representatives fro some 30 civil society organisations based in Abengourou received detailed and clear information on conventional and non-conventional mechanisms on the protection of human rights as well as the practical modalities for writing and submitting reports.
