UNHCR and UNOCI donate non-food items to female prisoners and children in Daloa prison

On the initiative of the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) and with the support of the Child Protection Section of the United Nations Operation in Côte d'Ivoire (UNOCI), 16 prisoners including nine minors, on Tuesday, 24 September 2013, received a donation of non-food items comprising mats, bed covers, buckets and toilet rolls.

Michelle Apala, representative of the UNHCR regional office in Guiglo, who handed over the items to the detainees at Daloa prison said that the aim of the donation was to improve the detention condition of the most vulnerable group in the prison, who are women and children.

The donation was made following a request from some of the prisoners last August asking for help to improve their living conditions. "{We had to respond to such a request. According to our means, we always try to provide support to prisoners }", added Michelle Apala.

The deputy registrar of Daloa prison, Dassi Desiré, expressed his satisfaction at the humanitarian action. "{We thank UNHCR and UNOCI for their assistance to prisoners. We do not have a great deal of resources to take care of the prisoners and your donation will help them greatly} ", he added.
