National Day of Solidarity: United Nations Unies reiterates its support to people in Guiglo

Actors from the United Nations (UN), on Wednesday, 13 November 2013, at an event to celebrate the National Day of Solidarity in the Cavally Region, reaffirmed their intention to continue to support the people of Guiglo, situated 530 km west of Abidjan, in the reconciliation process. The commitment was restated by the UN Office Coordinator in Guiglo during a conference on the theme:"Contribution of the United Nations to the Reinforcement of Social Cohesion".

In his address to participants, the UN Office Coordinator highlighted the different actions carried out by the United Nations for the benefit of the people in the west of Côte d'Ivoire in general and Guiglo in particular, to

restore the authority of the State, bring the different communities together, provide humanitarian aid, help returning refugees and exiles, support the judiciary and assist organisations such as the Truth, Dialogue and Reconciliation Commission and the National Authority for Disarmament, Demobilisation and Reintegration (ADDR). "All these activities carried out by UNOCI and the UN agencies to support the Ivorian Government, are aimed at creating the right conditions for social cohesion and lasting peace in your locality," said the UN Office Coordinator.

The Chief of Canton and Chief of the Land in Guiglo, Coulayes Victor Emmanuel, for his part, spoke on "the contribution of traditional chiefs in

the reconciliation process". "Traditional authorities must be impartial with a sense of justice, forgiveness and a culture of peace in order to properly manage their areas of responsibility," he insisted.

Earlier, the secretary-general of the local authority, Aoulou Assamoi Marc, the second deputy mayor, Madeleine Bellé, as well as the Regional Director of the Ministry for Solidarity, Amadou Koffi, had urged traditional chiefs, representatives of youth groups and women's association to carry out actions of value which promote solidarity.
