International Women’s Day celebrated in Nielle

The people of Nielle, 750 km north of Abidjan, celebrated the International Women's Day in partnership with the UN Operation in Cote d'Ivoire (UNOCI) on Saturday 8 March 2014.



In his address on the occasion, the head of the UNOCI delegation, Salif Boite of the Human rights Office expressed the UN Mission's support for women in their constant fight against poverty and the recognition of their rights. He also spoke in favour of improving the living and working conditions of women in the rural areas.



Presiding over the ceremony, the Prefect of Ouangolodougou, Sihindou Coulibaly said the celebration was aimed at bringing together all the women in the division. That is why he urged for unity in the fight against obstacles hindering the development of the woman especially gender-based violence and illiteracy.



The President of the NGO Women and Promotion of Nielle, Marie-Claire Djodjana, on behalf of women's associations in the area, stressed the importance of women in the development of every society. This day, according to her, marks the beginning of the awakening of conscience for the women of Nielle in the process of economic independence which cannot be achieved without social cohesion.



The celebration which took place in the presence of local administrative and political authorities, traditional and religious leaders, and a delegation of UNOCI as well as women's associations from other parts of Cote d'Ivoire and neighbouring Mali was marked by a march-past, traditional dances and singing as well as a visit to the maternity and the distributions of grinding machines.
