Intercommunity violence in Bounkani Region: UNOCI calls for calm and provides security support and helps transport humanitarian assistance

Abidjan, 26 March 2016

The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Côte d’Ivoire and head of the United Nations Operation in Côte d’Ivoire (UNOCI), Mrs Aïchatou Mindaoudou, deplores the violent incidents which have been happening since 24 March 2016, in surrounding villages and the town of Bouna, situated at 603 km from Abidjan in Bounkani Region in the northeast of the country.

The Head of UNOCI appeals to everyone in these areas to stay calm and show restraint. Mrs Mindaoudou urges everyone to use dialogue to peacefully manage their differences in an effort to establish lasting peace in the region and in Côte d’Ivoire.

Since these incidents started, UNOCI, in support of the national authorities, immediately deployed peacekeepers from its Rapid Reaction Force to Bouna to join in efforts to protect the civilian population. The UN Mission also facilitated the transporting of humanitarian aid provided by the Government, United Nations agencies and other partners.
