THE HEAD OF UNOCI VISITS AN IDENTIFICATION COLLECTION CENTRE IN ABOBO

Abidjan, 10 Octobet 2008.... The Special Representative of the Secretary General of the United Nations for Côte d'Ivoire, Mr. Y.J. Choi, visited the identification and voter registration center 1, 2 and 3 in Abobo Clouetcha this morning. Mr. Choi wanted to see first hand how the process was moving forward.

While at the site, the Head of the UN Operation in Côte d'Ivoire (UNOCI) was pleased with the general public's interest to participate in this process. Talking with applicants and with technical agents working in the Center, Mr. Choi noted that the logistical challenges (electricity, paying technical operators, running the computers, amongst other needs) and safeguarding the security situation must still be fully surmounted. "We will talk with the appropriate authorities, in order to guarantee that these problems are resolved," he explained.

Noting the advances that had already been achieved in the election process, the Special Representative extolled patience for "the final victory". He reaffirmed the commitment and continued support of UNOCI, within its mandate and available resources, to help the government of Côte d'Ivoire to complete this process.
