Electoral Division

The Electoral Division mission, objectives and tasks is defined by the 1528, 1609, 1633 and 1721 resolutions of the Security Council. The Electoral Division objective is to accompany the electoral authorities at all stages of the electoral process until the proclamation of the results.

Position and Structure

Under the authority of the Special Representative of the UN Secretary- General in Côte d'Ivoire and under the direct supervision of the Deputy Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General, the Electoral Assistance Division works closely with the other divisions and sections of UNOCI, the UNDP Election Project, the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) and all national and international institutions involved in the organization of elections.

The Electoral Assistance Division comprises the following structures: the office of the Director of the Division, the coordination of electoral operations, the coordination of the identification and information systems, the field coordination, coordination of the training and education of voters, coordination of international electoral observation. The Division has 16 regional electoral offices that are responsible for relaying counselling, monitoring, technical assistance to 430 local electoral commissions, from the localities where UNOCI offices are present.  In the west of the country, the Division has seven (7) regional offices which are in Daloa, Divo, Man, San Pedro, Guiglo, Odienné and Séguéla. In the east, it has nine (9) electoral offices which are in Yamoussoukro, Bouaké, Bondoukou, Korhogo, Daoukro Abengourou, Abidjan, Bouna, and Adzopé.

Partnerships of the electoral division, the national and international actors

As an advisory and electoral process support structure in Côte d'Ivoire, the Electoral Assistance Division has forged partnerships with various key players in the Ivorian political scene such as the Prime Minister, the CIS, CNSI, INS, ONI, and the various ministries. The Division has also developed a good synergy with UNDP, IFES, NDI, the Carter Center and assists as needed national NGOs.
