Village officials and residents in Biélé mobilise to strengthen social cohesion

The United Nations Operation in Côte d'Ivoire (UNOCI) based in Man, on Monday, 6 October 2014, organised a sensitisation and information forum targeting local communities, known as "ONUCI Tour", with village officials and residents in Biélé, in the sous-préfecture of Man, situated some 20 km from the city, and 670 km northwest of Abidjan.

The meeting, which was attended by more that 100 people some of them from eight neighbouring villages, focused on how best to promote social cohesion within communities in order to establish a peaceful environment, promote human rights and conflict resolution as a tool for development.

During the discussions, UNOCI's civilian, military and police components highlighted the harmful consequences of conflict on security and development. They urged participants to ensure that they consolidate peace in their region by promoting the culture of peace and respect for authority and human rights.

Speaking on behalf of his officials and the population, the chief of Biélé village, Gui Saho, welcomed the opportunity provided by UNOCI to discuss issues of importance, adding that it had been very useful. He expressed the hope that UNOCI will always be beside local authorities in carrying out actions aimed at strengthening social cohesion and conflict resolution in his village.
