UNOCI trains Ivorian gendarmes on prevention and fight against terrorism

Nearly 40 gendarmes of the Gendarmerie 4th Legion in Korhogo, 588 km north of Abidjan, attended a training course on the prevention and fight against terrorism organised by the United Nations Operation in Côte d'Ivoire (UNOCI) on Friday, 22 November 2013.



The course centred on the phenomenon of terrorism in general, its structures and mode of operation, the different terrorist groups causing havoc in northern Mali, and how to counter terrorism on the ground, UNOCI's Colonel Gharbi Ilyes explained.



"This training is timely because terrorism is rife in every country including African countries, the Commander of the Gendarmerie 4th Legion, Lt. Colonel Konan Sam Akaki concurred.



The course conducted by Col. Gharbi Ilyes and Issa Yacouba of UN Police covered 12 modules including: the kinds of arms employed by terrorists, types of terrorist acts, profile of a terrorist, structures and modus operandi of terrorists, religious terrorism such as Al Qaida, terrorist threats in Africa by Alqaeda in the Mahgreb and Boko Haram.



Participants promised to put the knowledge acquired into use in their various units and to work in close collaboration with the civilian population.
