UNOCI sensitises the population of the village of Banneu

Promote a peaceful electoral environment; encourage political tolerance social cohesion, and fight against female genital mutilation, were among the main topics discussed during the meeting between the United Nations Operation in Côte d'Ivoire (UNOCI) and the population of Banneu held on Wednesday, March 25, 2015.

The meeting, which took place in this village of the department of Zouan Hounien in far-western of Côte d'Ivoire, was attended by dozens of people, including the area's prefect and sub-prefect.

On this occasion, the Head of the UN Mission's delegation, Hélène Zomahoun Sylvie called on the population to work together to create a peaceful environment that could, according to her help foster the development of the region.

For his part, the village deputy chief, Albert Bagui, expressed his joy to receive UNOCI delegation. "We have always appreciated your wise counsels and we can assure you of our commitment to work together for peaceful elections and to promote sustainable development," he said.

As for the Sub-Prefect of Banneu, Amani Charles Koffi Kan, he welcomed, on behalf of the prefect, the actions of UNOCI in favor of the department. He stressed that the Mission's involvement has greatly contributed in the return of peace in the area

"Development is impossible in the context of a violent environment. Only order, discipline and work could help you achieve progress. You must learn how to live together. If you are united, you can rebuild your village by taking advantage of the support provided to you by the UN System, "he told villagers.

During the exchanges, the population raised among other concerns, the bad state of the roads in the area and the prevailing insecurity. They further stressed the need for parents to register their children at birth. The audience also asked questions about ways and means to seize competent courts whenever human rights are violated or the population is victim of harassment by security forces along the areas main roads.

The UNOCI delegation answered all questions and issues addressed by villagers.
