UNOCI and humanitarian agencies bring assistance to Faitai population

Following an attack on the village of Faitai by armed assailants on the night of 22 to 23 February 2014, the UN Operation in Cote d'Ivoire (UNOCI) has come to the assistance of the people with food donations, medical attention and advice. Four persons were killed and two injured in the attack on the village, 550 km north-west of Abidjan in the Grabo municipality.

"We have come to once more demonstrate our compassion after this unfortunate incident and to help restore calm," declared the head of the UNOCI delegation, Doudou Mulaba. "We are aware of the gravity of the psychological shock you have endured but we call on you to leave the matter behind you and get on with your life as before," he advised and urged them to promote cohesion and harmony between their communities.

Mr. Mulaba cautioned that the donation was not meant to make them dependent but should be seen as assistance and an encouragement.

The Mayor's representative, Blokoui Nemlin said this was time for work and returnees should encourage others to do the same. "All over the country, people are talking of peace and reconciliation and it's not going to be different here because what happened to your village is a passing event. Show that you can overcome the incident and help one another in the development of the village with the support from the international partners," he said.

The people expressed gratitude for the donation which was followed by discussions aimed at sensitizing the population on the peace and reconciliation process.
