UN Police distribute potable water and cold meals to victims of post electoral conflict

Police of the UN Operation in Cote d'Ivoire (UNOCI) based in Man, Tonkpi region on Wednesday 11 June 2014 distributed potable water and 30 cartons of cold meals to victims of the post electoral crisis who had come from remote areas of the region to take in the hearings of the national Commission on Dialogue, Truth and Reconciliation (CDVR).

The donation ceremony which took place at the Prefecture of Man, 600 km north-west of Abidjan was attended by the secretary-general of the Prefecture, Ernest Gouassiro who represented the Prefect of Tonkpi region and a delegation comprising staff of the Ivorian department of health and the UNOCI office in Man.

"Besides the logistic support UNOCI gives to the CDVR to facilitate its movement in the field, we of the UN Police thought it wise to bring our little support to the already disadvantaged victims coming from far away areas and who have to wait for long hours or even the whole day in order to be heard. We hope this donation will bring relief and enable them to wait patiently for their turn to speak to the Commission," the interim chief of post of UNPOL, Mathurin Rouamba explained.

The CDVR regional coordinator for Tonkpi, Monsignor Gaspard Bebi thanked UNOCI for the support to the victims and to the Tonkpi chapter of the CDVR with regard to technical and logistic support from the reconciliation up to the public hearing phase. "We will never stop thanking UNOCI for its efforts toward a true reconciliation in Cote d'Ivoire and Tonkpi region in particular," he said. "Today, you have come again with gifts to relieve our victims. We truly appreciate this gesture. The sons and daughters of Cote d'Ivoire count on you for the restoration of a lasting peace in their dear country," Monsignor Bebi concluded.

On behalf of the Prefect and the Ivorian government, the secretary-general of the Prefecture thanked the international community and UNOCI in particular for its effective participation in all the phases of the peace process in Cote d'Ivoire and promised that the donation would be put to good use.
