Special Representative received by President Ouattara

The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Côte d'Ivoire and head of the United Nations Operation in Côte d'Ivoire (UNOCI), Mrs Aïchatou Mindaoudou, was received by the Ivorian President, Alassane Ouattara on Thursday, 10 April 2014, in Abidjan.

Speaking at the end of the encounter, the Special Representative said that she and the Ivorian head of state had discussed the recent visit by UNOCI and UN agencies to the west of the country and the measures that need to be taken in order to organise elections in 2015.



« I have just met with his excellency, the President of the Republic who does me the honour of meeting with me regularly to discuss the situation in Côte d'Ivoire. Today, I briefed the President on the visit by the United Nations to the west of the country. We discussed the different recommendations which have to be implemented in order to deal with the situation in the west, »" said Mrs Mindaoudou.



With regard to the electoral process, the Special Representative said that she and President Ouattara also discussed the measures that have to be taken in order to organise elections in 2015.

« As far as the United Nations is concerned, it is important that a credible, transparent and inclusive mechanism is put in place so that transparent and democratic elections can be organised in a peaceful climate, » she said.

Speaking on behalf of the United Nations in Côte d'Ivoire, the Special Representative declared that she welcomed the adoption by the Government of a decree on a draft legislation on the revision of the Independent Electoral Commission on 9 April 2014.

« The Independent Electoral Commission which will be put in place and the revision of the electoral list, which it will be in charge of drawing up, are conditions for the holding of democratic, free and credible elections in Côte d'Ivoire, » she stressed.
