ONUCI-Tour promotes social cohesion and prevention of Ebola in Mbengue

The grassroots campaign of the UN Operation in Cote d'Ivoire (UNOCI) visited the Mbengue municipality (700 km north of Abidjan) on 27 November 2014 to discuss with community leaders about the strengthening of social cohesion and measures to prevent the Ebola virus fever.

ONUCI-Tour was led by Marta Romero of the Civil Affairs section who explained the multiple activities of the UN Mission aimed at promoting social cohesion, national reconciliation and security. "Avoid all forms of violence, but create conditions for your development in order to consolidate peaceful cohabitation in your different communities," she advised.

The Prefect of Mbengue division, Raymond Claude Djike recalled the support of the UN Mission in the settlement of conflicts in his area of jurisdiction and called on all components of the population to adhere to the ideals of peace and reconciliation advocated by the UN.

Earlier the regional director of health in Korhogo, Dr. Fofana Karamoko called on community leaders to respect hygiene measures recommended by health authorities in order to prevent the Ebola virus which is causing havoc in neighbouring Mali.

Discussions with the population also covered other issues including land disputes, conflicts between farmers and cattle grazers, political differences, and the question of illegal artisanal gold mining
