People in Tambi, sensitised on social cohesion and respect for human rights

Some 500 people took part in a sensitisation and discussion caravan organised by the United Nations Operation in Côte d'Ivoire (UNOCI), with villagers in Tambi, situated 434 km northeast of Abidjan in the presence of the deputy prefect of Sorobango.

In their presentations to participants, representatives of the UN Missions Public Information, Civil Affairs, Human Rights and UN Police sections urged people in Tambi to promote social cohesion which is a condition for development.

"The traditional chiefs, community and religious leaders have an important role to play along with the deputy prefect in order to restore social cohesion in Tambi," said the representative of the Civil Affairs Section. For his part, the human rights officer focused in the principle of participation which states that everyone should be associated social decision-making, reconciliation and the setting up of projects. He also highlighted respect for the law and the protection of civilians.

Brigitte Béchio of the Legal Clinic of Bondoukou, who helped organised the caravan, she sensitised participants on the importance knowing their rights and urged them to contact the new structure in Bondoukou, in order to better know their rights and duty which they will receive free of charge.

Addressing the UNOCI delegation, the chief of Tambi, François Mo Yao, expressed his gratitude for the information that participants were given to encourage the return of peace and to also know their rights..

The deputy prefect of Sorobango, Konan Kouakou Georges concluded by inviting the chiefs of Zagala, Déango, Boropoko, Dingra and Saniébo who came from neighbouring villages to take part in the event, to faithfully pass on the information they had received to their respective communities in order to promote lasting peace in the Gontougo regi
