Korobo village pledges to promote the culture of peace

A delegation of the UN Operation in Cote d'Ivoire (UNOCI) in collaboration with administrative authorities of Tanda Sub Prefecture (376 km east of Abidjan) on Friday 26 September 2014 visited the village of Korobo to discuss the promotion of the culture of peace with the population.

Introducing the topic, the head of UNOCI Public Information Office in Bondoukou. Desire Ndagijimana spoke of UNOCI's mandate to assist the crisis-resolution process in Cote d'Ivoire. « In order for Cote d'Ivoire to finally emerge from the crisis, we must make the culture of peace a reality by adopting a conduct which rejects violence and by demonstrating a spirit of mutual tolerance, especially in view of forthcoming elections, » he said.

He stressed the importance of the forthcoming elections in the normalization process in the country and urged the population to always resort to dialogue and negotiation as a means of resolving any eventual conflicts.

He called on the villagers to always report cases of violations in order not to promote the impunity of perpetrators.

For her part, Josephine Degbehouan of UN Police called for the respect of women's and children's rights, saying « women are your partners to be consulted for family and community projects ».

The Sub Prefect of Tanda Gilbert Gueu congratulated the Korobo notables for their respect of African values and state authority, an example which he said should inspire the rest of the country. He called on women to contribute to development. « Wake up and take your place and make your contribution to the life of the community, » he told them.

The Chief of Korobo village, Yao Fieni expressed gratitude to the UNOCI delegation for the quality of discussions and for choosing his village for the sensitisation exercise, pledging to spread the message brought by the UN Mission.
