UNOCI regional security coordinators explore methods and practices for crisis resolution

The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Côte d'Ivoire and head of the United Nations Operation in Côte d'Ivoire (UNOCI), Mrs Aïchatou Mindaoudou, on Thursday, 6 February 2014, officially opened a two-day training workshop for the UN Mission's regional security coordinators in Grand Bassam, 43 k from Abidjan.

In her opening speech, the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Côte d'Ivoire, who is also the United Nations Security Agent, reminded participants of the principal aim of the security management system of the United Nations which involves: "Assessing security risks in order to put in place adequate measures which will allow the United Nations to carry out its mandate under acceptable security conditions".

"I urge you to explore the different approaches and methods of resolving crises and security incidents," said Mrs Mindaoudou, adding that it was pertinent for the legal aspects to be included in the training programme.

In this regard, the Chief Security Adviser, Nathan Danquah, said that discussions during the training would provided an opportunity "to promote a good understanding of the legal aspects between the coordinators, security officers and local authorities, when the need arises".

The training workshop, which is focusing on the security management system of the United Nations, will be held over two days on 6 and 7 as well as on 14 and 15 February 2014. Some 40 participants comprising UNOCI regional security coordinators and officers are taking part in the sessions.
