UNOCI contributes to defusing tension among the population of Folon

The Sub Prefecture of Tienko, 95 km north of Odienne in the Folon region on the Ivorian-Mali border has been experiencing recurrent conflicts related to cattle theft, the destruction of food crops by cattle, land ownership problems and rape of women.

In a bid to find a peace solution to these inter-communal differences in that part of the country, the regional office of the UN Operation in Cote d'Ivoire (UNOCI) in collaboration with the Sub Prefect of Tienko and a human rights NGO last week launched an appeasement campaign to sensitise the people on peaceful conflict management, respect of the laws and the culture of peaceful co-existence. The campaign which lasted from 16- 18 October 2013 covered three areas: Kimbrila-Nord, Diolola, and Tienko.

UNOCI Civil Affairs representative spoke to the people about the reinforcement of state authority and the peaceful management of conflicts. "{UNOCI is calling on you to avoid vengeance and not to take the law into your own hands. Remember that everyone is a loser whenever there is a war. It is important that you put your efforts together to achieve a lasting social cohesion}," he advised.

The Chief of Canton, Doumbia Moussa took the floor and expressed the hope for frank and equitable collaboration in order to maintain social cohesion among the different peoples living in the 19 villages of the Bogodougou canton.

"{I plead with you to work toward peace and the consolidation of social cohesion. I call on you to especially exercise patience}," the Sub Prefect of Tienko, Koffi Amani Ignace said.
