United Nations Medal: 488 soldiers from UNOCI’s 13th Senegalese Battalion decorated in Yamoussoukro

The Force Commander of the United Nations Operation in Côte d'Ivoire (UNOCI), General Muhammad Iqbal Asi, on Wednesday, 21 August 2013, decorated 488 soldiers from the 13th Senegalese Battalion with the United Nations Medal.



The ceremony took place at the Jean Paul II Square in Yamoussoukro in the presence of the Military Attache of the Senegalese Embassy, who represented the Chief of Staff of the Senegalese Army, the Governor of Yamoussoukro District, Dr. Augustin Thiam, the Prefect of Bélier Region, André Ekponon Assoumou, a number of officials from the local Ivorian security forces and the population.



Speaking at the ceremony, Colonel Ibrahima Thiam, Commander of UNOCI's 13th Senegalese Battalion expressed his joy and gratitude towards UNOCI authorities for the distinction of the United Nations in recognition of its appreciation for the Battalion's contribution towards peacekeeping in Côte d'Ivoire. He also reaffirmed the determination of his men "Les Jambaars" to work for peace in Côte d'Ivoire: "In accordance with its mission and mandate, SENBATT remains determined to work tireless for peace and security, for a reconciled, united Côte d'Ivoire to once again play its rightful role in the concert of nations in Africa and the world," he added.



"Jambaars", you have just received the United Nations Medal. Each of you should consider it as a merit and feel honoured," said General Iqbal Asi, UNOCI Force Commander. He congratulated the Senegalese peacekeepers on their professionalism and their contribution to efforts to bring peace to Cote d'Ivoire, especially during the municipal and regional elections held in April 2013, adding that the UN Mission was grateful to them for this. "Dear Jambaars, apart from the operational aspects of your mission, you have distinguished yourself in a positive way to local people... This is why on behalf of the United Nations Secretary-General and the international community, I would like to express my gratitude to you and warmly congratulate you," said General Iqbal Asi.



After the peacekeepers were decorated, they carried a military parade and gave a cultural and artistic performance on the theme of peace and reconciliation. Guests were also offered a lunch at the end of the ceremony.
