The Pakistani and Senegalese battalions of the United Nations Operation in Côte d'Ivoire (UNOCI) and UN Police based in Yamoussoukro, took an active part in extinguishing a fire that broke out in the main market of the political capital, Yamoussoukro, on Wednesday, 4 September 2013. The fire broke out in a shop where cooking gas bottles had been stored.
The peacekeepers deployed two water tankers and more than a dozen soldiers who fought to prevent the fire from spreading to other shops, while the Senegalese battalion and UN Police assisted local security forces in mounting a human wall to prevent looting.
Security forces are still investigating the cause of the blaze and damages have been estimated at millions of CFA francs.
